Citizens Committee for Flood Relief (De Soto, MO)

50 minutes outside of St. Louis, the City of De Soto has been repeatedly struck by flash flooding from the Joachim Creek, which runs through the center of town past the historic railyard. Buy-In supports the community advocacy group Citizens’ Committee for Flood Relief and city government officials in engaging local residents who want to relocate out of flood-prone neighborhoods.

Cherokee Concerned Citizens (Pascagoula, MS)

The Cherokee Forest neighborhood is a small subdivision of approximately 130 parcels that has increasingly been experiencing devastating health effects from the combined influence of industry, flooding, and storms. Unlike many coastal communities threatened by storm surge and sea level rise, the vast majority of Cherokee Forest residents are largely united in their desire to retreat and find safer places to live. Given the personal connections and responsibilities with the town and its businesses, residents envision restoring the lands of the Cherokee neighborhood back into marsh and forest in order to protect the other homes from industrial emissions and storm surge.

Buy-In has supported CCC with a neighborhood household survey and is currently working with project partners on a Relocation to Restoration plan funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation National Coastal Resilience Fund.
